Who is a Refugee?
As the world shrinks and its citizens become more mobile, we see people fleeing countries that are in political, economic, and cultural crises. It is common to see on the news that these individuals are called refugees because they are fleeing their country to escape whatever crisis it may be enduring. I assure you that all of these individual refugees have their own stories as to why they have left their homes seeking a better life.
In the United States, however, a refugee has a distinct definition that falls in line with the United Nations definition. A refugee is someone who is unable or unwilling to return to their country of origin due to a well-founded fear of being persecuted on account of race, religion, nationality, membership in a particular social group, or political opinion.
