America has issues. Yes, it’s a great country, but it’s not a perfect country. When most Americans think of undocumented immigrants, the little dark-skinned Black girl is not the image that pops up. Undocumented immigrants already have to live in the shadows of society, but to be Black and undocumented creates a shadow within the shadows. Undocumented often means invisible, voiceless, and powerless.
To be Black and undocumented means all of those things coupled with racism in America. I am not unique in the sense that I came to the United States by boat. I am not unique in the sense that I lived my youth as undocumented.
